How to zero and calibrate pressure sensors?

If you want to obtain accurate measurement results for pressure sensors, it is very important to properly zero and calibrate pressure sensors.

pressure sensors

1. the principle of zeroing

Hey, you know what? Zeroing the pressure sensor means setting its output value to zero before use, so that there can be a calibration head for experiments and measurements later on.

The output value of that sensor is called “zero drift”. Generally speaking, this zero drift is mostly caused by external factors such as temperature changes, pressure changes, and mechanical vibrations. If the sensor is set to zero, the output value of the sensor can be reset to zero, eliminating the impact of zero drift and ensuring that the sensor output value is accurate and stable.

 2. the principle of calibration

The calibration of a sensor corrects for an error between the output value of the sensor and the actual measured value, which is known as “calibration drift”.

The calibration operation of the sensor is a very important operation, which can effectively eliminate the drift phenomenon of the sensor and improve the accurate measurement ability and accuracy of the sensor.

During calibrating pressure sensors, the output value of the sensor needs to be compared with the standard measured value, and the error is eliminated by adjusting the parameters of the sensor, so that the output value of the sensor is consistent with the actual measured value.

 3. Zeroing method

3.1. Use the auto-zero function

Modern pressure sensors are often equipped with an auto-zero function, which helps the user to automatically detect and eliminate zero drift of the sensor.

Usually, this function runs automatically for the first few minutes of the sensor device’s operation, ensuring that the sensor’s output value is in a stable state. If your sensor does not have an auto-zero function, you will need to manually adjust it for zero calibration. Here’s a simple step:

3.2. Manually adjust the zero point

Manually adjusting the zero point is one of the traditional zeroing methods, and its operation is very simple. First, the sensor is placed in a pressure-free state and the pressure sensor is connected to the metering device.

Then, adjust the sensor output value to zero. When adjusting the zero point, it needs to be adjusted according to the sensor instruction manual to ensure the accuracy and stability of the sensor output value.
